Jaffer A. Ajani, MD, is a professor of medicine and an internist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, where he works in the department of gastrointestinal medical oncology.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr Ajani earned his medical degree from Government Medical College in Nagpur, India, where he completed a rotating internship and a residency in general surgery and orthopedics before continuing on to Pennsylvania State University for an internship and residency in family practice. Dr Ajani completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine and was subsequently awarded a clinical fellowship in medical oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He remained at the center for an additional 2-year research fellowship in medical oncology.

Dr Ajani is the Chief Scientific Officer of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Cancer. He has chaired the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's Esophageal and Gastric Adenocarcinoma Guidelines committee for 20+ years. Previously, he served as chair of the medical oncology committee of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.

Dr Ajani is board certified in family medicine and internal medicine, as well as the medical oncology subspecialty. His primary research interest is gastrointestinal oncology. He has written more than 450 peer reviewed publications on the topic. He is the recipient of several NCI and DOD grants.
1. Summarize the pathogenesis and molecular pathways involved in the development and progression of gastric cancer
2. Evaluate the safety, efficacy, and quality of data for available and emerging targeted therapies for locally advanced or metastatic gastric and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma
3. Individualize and optimize treatment with sequencing and management of treatment-related adverse events for locally advanced or metastatic gastric and GEJ adenocarcinoma
4. Engage patients with locally advanced or metastatic gastric and GEJ adenocarcinoma in their care by implementing effective shared decision making (SDM) strategies
