Dr. Weber joined the faculty of Boston University School of Medicine as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Gastroenterology in 1997. Dr. Weber is a native of Germany and graduated from Hamburg University Medical School. He completed his training in internal medicine at the University of Mainz, Germany, and at the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, MA, and his fellowship in gastroenterology at Georgetown University Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. He is board-certified in gastroenterology.
 
Dr. Weber's research focuses on the biology and clinical aspects of gastrointestinal hormones. His clinical interests include obesity, gastric acid-related disorders, such as peptic ulcer disease and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), functional bowel disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and genetic disorders of the gut. He is a nationally recognized authority in the field of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors (NET), including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed original publications, book chapters, reviews and abstracts. Dr. Weber is a member of several professional societies including the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and is also member of editorial boards of several professional journals.

Dr. Halpert is a gastroenterologist at Pentucket Medical Associates in Haverhill, MA and Assistant Professor in the Section of Gastroenterology at the Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, MA.
 
Dr. Halpert received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Charles University School of Medicine in Prague, Czech Republic. She completed gastroenterology fellowships at St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO and at the Center for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
 
Dr. Halpert’s clinical and research interests include the management of functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, dyspepsia, constipation, and fecal incontinence. Other areas of interest include antidepressant treatment in IBS, patient education and patient – physician relationship.
 
She is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders.
1. Identify symptom criteria for the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its subtypes by eliciting a thorough patient history and applying clinical symptom criteria
2. Implement available screening and diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of IBS and recognize indications for referral to specialist care
3. Articulate the range of treatment options (both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies) for patients with IBS
4. Interpret consensus guidelines for the management of IBS
5. Summarize evidence-based guidelines for effective monitoring of patients with IBS
6. Establish strategies to improve communication between patients and healthcare providers concerning their symptoms of IBS and its management in order to improve outcomes

For IBS-D off-label discussion of probiotics, loperamide, diphenoxylate-atropine, smooth muscle antispasmodics, tricyclic antidepressants, antibiotics and bile salts (cholestyramine) will be included. For IBS-C off-label discussion of fiber supplementation, laxatives, plecanatide (CIC), antispasmodics, SSRI/SNRI and behavioral therapies.
